For example, a new itinerary includes leaving Honolulu at 3 p.m. local time and landing in Oakland at 11:10 p.m. The next morning, you would depart Oakland at 5:04 a.m., arriving in Houston at 10:45 a.m.
Overnight flights are popular with Hawaii travelers because they effectively extend trips by an additional day,Southwest isn’t adding new flights to its schedule to offer overnight connections. Instead, it’s simply connecting already existing late flights with early flights the following day. The overnight connections will happen at six airports — Baltimore, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Chicago Midway and Oakland — because of “operational needs, staffing, and airport services available,” according to the airline. The connections won’t be available to unaccompanied minors.
These connections are a first for Southwest, as it has previously only offered daytime connections. It also could be a step toward finally offering redeye flights. Up until 2017, Southwest couldn’t offer redeye flights because of a quirk in its reservation system.
