Veteran assistant coach Fred Williams, an Inglewood native, will take over on an interim basis after the Sparks started 5-7 this season
Derek Fisher’s tenure as head coach and general manager of the Sparks is done, the team said in a news release Tuesday.
Eric Holoman, the Sparks’ managing partner, said the organization came to the decision after “a thorough evaluation of the state of our team.” Williams has been a coach for nearly 40 years, including the past 25 in the pro ranks and the previous three with the Sparks. Included in Williams’ WNBA tenure were five seasons as the head coach of the Tulsa Shock/Dallas Wings, whom he led to a pair of playoff berths – and with whom he made a strong connection with Liz Cambage, the Sparks’ new star center who played for him in Dallas.
Said Toler then: “When Brian wanted to resign, I thought , ‘Here’s a guy who has some experience. Good or bad, it’s still experience.’” And last season, following the free agency departures of Parker and All-Star point guard Chelsea Gray, the Sparks finished 12-20 and missed the playoffs for just the fifth time in the franchise’s 25-year history.
