Finney will explore how race plays into why we do what we do where we do it. The emphasis is on“There is not one narrative,” she said in a recent phone interview. She asks, “Who gets to decide what the narrative is? Who tells it? Who decides what stories?”

“It is a strange moment that we can’t teach black history,” she says, referring to the battle over critical race theory. “It’s human impulse to not want to talk about it, but not talking changes nothing. “How do we repair those relationships, how do we think about redemption?” she asks. “How do we support each other?” Her thinking and writing combine environmental history, arts and culture, and social justice.

“Racial diversity in Greater Cleveland has been growing in the last decade,” Joel Alpern, Co-Interim president and CEO of Holden Forests & Gardens, said in a press release. “At the same time, audiences for cultural attractions like public gardens and museums have historically lacked such diversity. We are honored to host and learn from Dr. Finney, as we work to expand our audience and foster a more vibrant, inclusive community.
