The Amazing Spider-Man 2 loads Peter Parker up with even more guilt, as the murderous gangster Tombstone admits that having been publicly disrespected by the Wall-Crawler, he needs to up the violence to repair his reputation.
Though Spider-Man’s aim of stopping some of New York’s most notorious crooks is noble, Tombstone just hit him with the terrible truth that his efforts are motivating bigger and badder crimes. By focusing on taking down targets individually, the Webslinger is missing the larger picture, which is that career supercriminals actually get worse thanks to his interference.
In a situation where he has already done something very wrong, this rubs salt into Spider-Man's wounds, with the Wall-Crawler firing back with an uncharacteristic denial of responsibility. This tone from Spider-Man is uncommon, showing that he instantly recognizes his adversary’s logic. Already riddled with guilt, a devastating follow-up punch from Tombstone takes away one of Spider-Man's key abilities, knocking the wind out of him to stop his disarming banter.
