Sort of.
Then I spent some time with a cannabis tech startup, which came out of mentoring at the LaunchPad program at Wilfrid Laurier University, which is their startup incubator. It was a good introduction to the industry. How has your experience working in this industry and owning your own business differed from working for a large corporation?
That’s definitely one of the key things. When we were trying to figure out what to do, we drew inspiration from the local community. I’ve lived here 20 years, my wife 30, and our favourite part about KW is some of the independent local shops. There’s a specific store for everything. And they’re family-run, they’ve been around forever and they’re landmarks now. That’s the approach that we wanted to take.
We run the team differently, too. We have a really high level of flexibility to accommodate different people with whatever they’ve got going on in their lives. We have 100 per cent paid by us benefits for all full-time employees. We try to take care of our kids, as we call them here. So that all translates to this positive vibe that customers picked up on but it’s very hard to do that.
