SAN ANTONIO - The Spurs will honor franchise co-founder and two-time owner B.J."Red" McCombs by wearing red jersey patches emblazoned with his initials"RM" for the remainder of the season.
The Spurs unveiled the patches on the left strap of their jerseys at Thursday night's win over Indiana. They began the night's festivities with a video tribute to the San Antonio billionaire, businessman and philanthropist, who died Feb. 19 at age 95. McCombs and San Antonio stockbroker Angelo Drossos headed the original ownership group that brought the then-ABA franchise to San Antonio from Dallas.
Spurs managing partner Peter J. Holt and Spurs CEO R.C. Buford were among those from the organization who attended the funeral service for McCombs on Monday at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts."Red had a profound influence on our family through his focus on positively impacting all around him," Holt said."For me personally, his kindness, thoughtfulness, and boldness will forever shape my perspective.
Said Buford,"As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, it’s important to state that without Red and Charline there would be no Spurs. His approach, vision and impact were unique and wonderful. On a personal level, I am forever grateful for the trust, support and lessons that Red provided to me and my family over our 35-year friendship. There will never be another Red McCombs."
