OKLAHOMA CITY — With his play on the rise, Spurs rookie guard Malaki Branham believes he’s on a path to someday reach his goal of becoming the second-best NBA player to come out of St. Vincent-St. Mary High in Akron, Ohio.
In 26 minutes off the bench Monday night, Branham pumped in a season-best 20 points, going 7 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line to help the Spurs beat Utah 126-122.Monday’s contest marked Branham’s third double-digit scoring effort since he had 12 points against Miami on Dec. 12 and his fourth overall.
“I told him a couple plays later, ‘I’m going to knock it down if you pass it to me,’” Branham said. “That was a great pass from him.” “ has a lot of trust in me, and I appreciate that, putting the rookie in,” said Branham, who scored four points in the final frame. “I know he’s not used to doing that, but it’s great to just be in those moments and just try to live up to them.”
Spurs guard Devin Vassell said Branham’s recent play underscores how he’s rapidly “growing and maturing.” It’s quite a transformation for a player who struggled to find his footing early on.
