“When things would go wrong when I played, my reaction was always to just rage and burn the town down,” said Mike, 53.
“We don’t talk about basketball in the car,” Mike told his son. “We don’t talk about it after the game or before the game. When it’s over, it’s done.”“Elementary school, middle school, was when it was really bad,” Zach said of his behavior. “Once I got to high school, it was much better. But early on in my life, it was not good.”Same goes for his mother.
As a young player, the Spurs’ Zach Collins says he didn’t handle situations well always, but that’s changed largely due to his dad.“Without question, he has his mom’s heart,” Mike said. “He’s got my brain in terms of processing, but his mom’s heart through and through.” His father’s guidance also helped Zach overcome the injuries he suffered with Portland that limited him to playing in only a combined 39 games from 2019-22 and that forced him to miss the entire 2020-21 season after he entered the NBA as the 10th overall pick in 2017.He also stressed something else that helped Zach gain perspective.
Zach’s perseverance has paid off this season. He entered Sunday’s game against Sacramento averaging 9.4 points per game on 53.9 percent shooting, both career highs. He’s also averaging 5.8 rebounds and a career-best 2.5 assists in 32 games, his most since appearing in 77 with Portland in 2018-19.
