Squatters believed to have started fire in abandoned bungalow at East County residential-treatment center [Breaking]

Firefighters doused a fire they believe was started by squatters living in an abandoned bungalow at a residential-treatment center near Rancho San Diego early Monday, officials said.

The blaze was reported shortly after 7:15 a.m. at the Adeona Healthcare property on Steele Canyon Road near Heatherwood Drive in the Jamacha area. The fire was found in an abandoned bungalow, next to another bungalow, at the back end of the property. Firefighters were told property managers had chased off squatters who were living in the structure a week or so ago.“It is supposed to be abandoned. What we found was a lot of debris that looked similar to what a homeless encampment would be,” said Ron Quinlan, a battalion chief for San Miguel Fire & Rescue.

He said investigators will try to determine if the fire was intentionally started. Fire officials estimated the damage at between $40,000 to $60,000.After forcing entry into the building, crews worked quickly to knock down the flames, he said. The overhaul of the fire took a while because of all the debris inside the bungalow.
