Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae shares new plot details and a filming update for season 2. After Squid Game became Netflix's most defining show in 2021, alongside winning numerous awards and critical acclaim, the survival thriller has more story tell outside of death-defying games. In the Squid Game season 1 finale, after winning the competition and having a chance to start fresh abroad, Gi-hun decides to stay in Seoul to expose the mysterious organization behind the titular games.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While promoting many upcoming projects, Lee spoke to AllKPop about what Squid Game season 2 will bring. The actor revealed that the main thrust of the upcoming episodes will be revenge and that he'll work with Lee Byung-hun — who portrayed Hwang In-ho, The Front Man, who oversees the competition. Lee also revealed that Squid Game season 2 will begin filming in the summer, likely lasting for ten months.
"As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 will be revenge, and the key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season 1 was Lee Byung Hun sunbae, so it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story. This is the first time that I'll be working with Lee Byung Hun sunbae, actually. Well, we worked on a drama called 'White Nights 3.98' back in the day, but we didn't have any scenes together.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has shared cautious advice about season 2 expectations, noting that the show was the end result of work that had been ongoing for many years. The creator, nonetheless, also talked about plans to continue the world. What makes the interest and curiosity about Squid Game season 2 all the more notable is that the story is fundamentally about how money, greed, and rampant capitalism sullies connections and incentivizes bad decisions.
One possible solution is for Netflix to allow Hwang, Lee, and all the Squid Game collaborators the time and resources to execute the next chapter in the best possible way. The good news is that, generally, based on what other creatives have said, the streaming service doesn't tend to interfere with the creative process. So, while there is cause for trepidation, there are reasons to be hopeful.
