The blasts in the churches took place at approximately 8:45 a.m. in the cities of Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa. More than 200 people were admitted to hospitals.

At least 50 people were killed in Colombo and 62 in the nearby town of Negombo, said Anil Jasinghe, director of the National Hospital in Colombo, the nation’s capital. Kaneshlingam Kala, a hospital official in the eastern city of Batticaloa, said 25 people were killed at Zion Church. Another deadly blast took place at St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo, a beach town about 20 miles north of the capital.
Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka’s prime minister, condemned what he called “the cowardly attacks on our people today” and urged the country to remain “united and strong.”
