The Calgary Stampede brings community spirit and an economic boost to each summer, adding to the unique flavour of Calgary.
Dave Kelly says the spirit of Stampede is pure magic.As a father of two, Kelly is well aware of how magical it can be even without the presence of Hollywood and other royalty. “I’ve seen my son graduate from the kiddies’ roller coaster to the big roller coaster and my daughter gets so excited about the haunted house,” he says.
Ellen Parker, CEO of Parker PR, is one of many Calgarians who note Stampede provides opportunities doing business as well as having some fun.Stampede, though, is also big business for her and Parker PR’s eight full-time employees and three interns. Each year, she and her team spend weeks ahead of time coaching their clients about how to make the most of their Stampede experience.
Together with their families, those First Nations members camped in Victoria Park along the Elbow River, in what is known today as Sun Tree Park, just across from the BMO Centre. The site of what is today called Elbow River Camp — one of Stampede’s most popular attractions, with visitors flocking to the area each year to learn more about Indigenous culture.
Stampede officials are celebrating that centennial while being optimistic about this year’s event, noting that after a couple of challenging years during the pandemic things are on an upswing. Last year, more thanentered Stampede Grounds during the 10 days of the event — just 60,000 people shy of the pre-pandemic figure from 2019 which was also the second-highest turnstile count ever.
On Thursday, July 13, the Best of the East will surely see its usual crowd of more than 5,000 early risers, who come out for a Stampede breakfast featuring cuisine that’s a bit of a departure from the usual flapjack and sausage fare doled out all over the city.Article content
