The three mayoral candidates for the city of Portage complemented each other but also drew distinctions at a mayoral debate.
The Woodland Park event, sponsored by the Porter County League of Women Voters and Lakeshore Public Media, was standing room only. League President Beckie Guffin said no more chairs could be set out because the large Sycamore Room was already at capacity. “One of the best things about Portage is we take our city seriously,” Republican candidate Austin Bonta said, noting the crowd size. “I am so excited to talk about the city of Portage and how we’re going to move in a new direction.
That money got the city through what he called the mismanagement of past administrations, he said, but now it’s gone. Cooper, a local pastor, said the pandemic wasn’t as kind to him as to the city. He was laid off during the pandemic. “We absolutely need to have a human resources department. I think it is absolutely essential,” Bonta said. “Human relations is actually, done right, proactive” and not just about firing people, he said.
