A new way of film editing is now possible, researchers say, raising concerns at a time when the authenticity of video is increasingly being questioned.
A new way of film editing is now possible, according to researchers from Stanford University, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics , Princeton University and Adobe Research ADBE, +0.71% .
The result: a virtually flawless video of the person saying entirely new text, which researchers say could help video editors and producers avoid expensive reshoots. How it works: Video editors can choose footage of the subject saying correct words, shot separately, and insert it instead of a flubbed or left-out word.
It is difficult for an untrained viewer to tell the footage is doctored. In a study of 138 participants, edited videos were thought to be real about 60% of the time, the researchers found.
