Since the NCAA tournament expanded to its current format in 1999, only two teams had ever overcomethree-run deficits in the super regionals to advance to the College World Series. Texas aspired to become the third Sunday night against No. 9 national seed Stanford at Sunken Diamond.
Texas had pockets of success against Mathews on a mild Sunday night in California. But those proved fleeting against the lefthander, who struck out every single Longhorn once to finish with a career-high 16 Ks. Daly was the first Longhorn to come across and score, too. First baseman Jared Thomas turned one of Mathews' few costly mistakes into a triple down the right-field line, plating Daly to knot the game at 1-1 in the third.
It laid off and forced Texas starter Lebarron Johnson Jr. to make pitches, staging a sort of war of attrition with the rising redshirt sophomore who’d pitched a complete game against No. 8 national seed Miami just last weekend. Johnson ended up throwing 97 pitches across 4 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs with four strikeouts and four walks.
