Screen Rant interviews Star Trek: Lower Decks showrunner Mike McMahan about the season 4 finale, the Strange New Worlds crossover, and season 5 hints.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 had an explosive finale that showrunner and creator Mike McMahan filled with the show's trademark Easter eggs and callbacks to Star Trek: The Next Generation and other Star Trek shows and movies.
Before we get into the finale, I never got to ask you about the crossover with Strange New Worlds. Finally seeing it and how everybody reacted to it. What was that like for you? And it also spoke to how wrong Nick Locarno was to think that Mariner thought about Starfleet the same way he did. If you've watched all of Lower Decks - Locarno hasn't watched Lower Decks - we all knew Mariner wasn't going to be tempted. I didn't even play that for a second. When you're watching 410, there's no moment where it's like, "Oh, is she going to agree with him?" You're waiting to see how she takes him down. And that was really important to me.
Mike McMahan: No, no, no, no. That would be a type of fan service. To me, that would be disrespectful to a storyline that had a lot of impact on me. And it would feel good, but also a little hollow. Like did we learn nothing from Pet Sematary? Metaphorically, undoing that for the sake of an animated comedy instead of using the weight of it for character development, that was never on my radar. It would have gone against how I see Trek canon.
Mike McMahan: Calling it out too was helpful to me because Locarno is kind of our con, you know? He's an episodic character who we bring back decades later for a bigger cinematic heel turn. And usually, I don't like to futz with - exactly like we were just talking about with Sito - I don't like to undo or futz with or change paths of stuff that existed before. But we have Tom Paris. From a storytelling and structural point of view, he's got the redemption arc.
Mike McMahan: Yeah, they're great. And I love that somebody the other day online said, "I don't know if I like Lower Decks. It feels like Star Trek for Girls." And I was like, you couldn't have praised the show more. I didn't respond to it, vut I was like, Oh my God, if that's how Lower Decks gets known, give me an Emmy right now. Because I love the matriarchal Orion stuff so much. It's so fun to write. I love Tendi, I love Mariner, and telling those stories.
Season 5 is written, right? I just want to talk a little bit about it. Whatever you can share. Is there anything you want us to know?
