The beginnings of the best.

Warning: potential spoilers for Star Trek: Picard's Academy #1 ahead! The formative years of Jean-Luc Picard's career are set to be explored in IDW’s new Star Trek series, Star Trek: Picard’s Academy, a series that places readers firmly in the character's shoes, building on the tantalizing glimpses the franchise has provided over the years of the legendary captain's Academy days.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Trek: Picard’s Academy – written by Sam Maggs, drawn by Ornella Greco, colored by Charlie Kirchoff and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry – opens during Picard’s sophomore year at the Academy, with readers meeting both his friends and enemies. The series will explore how Jean-Luc Picard grew into the dynamic leader Trek fans are familiar with, depicting the experiences and people that shaped him into one of Starfleet’s best.

Picard's Academy Is Perfect for Young Adult Audiences Picard’s Academy finds Jean-Luc at the beginning of a glorious career, one that seemed it might amount to nothing, given his behavior at the start of his Academy training. Throughout The Next Generation's seven seasons, only glimpses of Picard’s time at Starfleet Academy were revealed. By his own admission, he was arrogant, stubborn, a know-it-all.

Star Trek: Picard’s Academy is not aimed specifically at young adults, but it deals with themes very near to them. Translating the college experience to the 24th century, Picard’s Academy shows young Jean-Luc struggling to find his place, as he tries to focus on his studies while at the same time navigating the complex social relationships that come with transitioning to the adult world.

Starfleet Academy has proven an irresistible source of stories for the franchise. Over the years, various attempts to get a Starfleet Academy television show off the ground have been made, and finally, earlier this year, Paramount finally announced a Starfleet Academy show will be produced to air on Paramount +. There have also been at least two comics series focusing on the institution, as well as a number of novels.
