A recent scene seems to confirm that Star Wars is embracing a major Knights of the Old Republic hero back into its official continuity.
Star Wars recent High Republic initiative seemingly brought a beloved Knights of the Old Republic character back into official canon. Following Disney's acquisition of Star Wars in 2012, most of the franchise outside the mainline films and TV series were purged from official canon. Rebranded as Legends material, much of what was once Star Wars' Extended Universe, ranging from Grand Admiral Thrawn to the Outrider, has slowly trickled back into or influenced modern continuity.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In 2021's Star Wars: The High Republic #2, Jedi serving during the period of the High Republic make the surprised exclamation "Surik's blade!" The name Surik is shared with an important character from KOTOR II: Meetra Surik, also known as the Jedi Exile.
In her original story, Surik was exiled from the Jedi Order in response to her participation in the Mandalorian Wars. During her exile, Surik came to play an instrumental role in defeating the Sith Triumvirate. With her position in the Jedi Order restored, Surik went on to seek out Revan, allying herself with the redeemed Darth against the Sith Empire. The effort eventually cost Surik her life, but even in death the Jedi Knight remained a steadfast ally against the Sith.
Why KOTOR Is Stuck in Canon Limbo Disney-era Star Wars has seemed hesitant about approaching the era of the Old Republic. Previous efforts to re-canonize elements of it have been, like Surik, minimal nods to the character's existence while grander attempts have been ultimately rejected. Just prior to Disney's acquisition of Star Wars, Darth Revan was originally slated to appear in a 2011 episode of The Clone Wars, but was cut by request of George Lucas himself.
With Cavan Scott clearly aware of the connotations of invoking Surik's name, the Jedi Exile may once again have become an official part of the franchise's timeline. It will be interesting to see if Star Wars will expand not just on Surik, but return to once again explore the near-forgotten era of the Knights of the Old Republic.
