The Legends-era Sith Lord Exar Kun was sneakily referenced in Star Wars canon properties, confirming the villain's existence in both timelines.

One of the Star Wars Legends continuity’s most powerful Sith Lords exists in some form in the current canon storyline. Exar Kun, who appears in the Legends-era Tales of the Jedi comics and four post-Imperial era novels, nearly rivals Palpatine himself in dark side power and is naturally one of the Legends continuity’s most notable Sith Lords. Exar Kun’s existence in the new canon is confirmed by several sourcebooks and an Easter egg in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While Exar Kun has yet to appear in a live-action Star Wars project, his influence is shown rather prominently in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, which features Darth Maul’s signature weapon: a double-bladed lightsaber. The double-bladed lightsaber, having debuted in Legends several years before The Phantom Menace released, is one of many Legends-era elements that made it into the main Star Wars saga movies.

There are few Legends-era Star Wars characters capable of equaling, let alone defeating, Exar Kun. Although Luke Skywalker never battled Kun when the latter possessed a physical body, he would have been able to defeat the legendary Sith, albeit with difficulty, at the height of his strength as the New Jedi Order’s Grandmaster.

Everything Star Wars Canon Has Revealed About Exar Kun Exar Kun is most notably referenced in a minuscule Easter egg in Solo. Crimson Dawn crime boss Dryden Vos uses an obsidian stone as a base for his desk aboard the First Light, with an inscription reading “Our temple honouring Sith Lord Exar Kun.” Two years before Solo, the canon sourcebook Nexus of Power mentions Exar Kun as well, hinting that elements of his Legends-era history apply to the current continuity.
