The Chosen One prophecy isn't the only reason Qui-Gon Jinn was willing to defy the Jedi Council over Anakin Skywalker - his past played a part, too.
Star Wars revealed the real reason Qui-Gon Jinn was so defiant toward the Jedi Council when it came to training Anakin Skywalker. In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon believed that Anakin was the Chosen One. The Chosen One was referenced in an ancient prophecy – a prophecy that, while alluded to in The Phantom Menace, wouldn’t be properly explored until Claudia Gray’s novel Master & Apprentice, published in 2019.

Naturally, Qui-Gon would want to ensure that the Chosen One was well-trained – but the Council was reluctant, due to Anakin’s advanced age. In The Phantom Menace, Anakin was nine years old, older than any other Jedi Order inductee that had come before.
Despite Aveross’ differences, however, he and Qui-Gon became good friends. And, while Qui-Gon came to believe that some of Rael’s choices were reckless, he empathized with him more than others within the Jedi Order. Rael had proven, despite a penchant for trouble-making and impulsivity, to be a decent and loyal man – and a good Jedi. In the end, Qui-Gon’s experiences with Rael undoubtedly influenced his decision to train Anakin, even at a much older age.
Was The Jedi Order Right About The Dangers Of Inducting Older Younglings? One of the reasons the Jedi Council were so wary of accepting older younglings into the Order is because they feared how their attachment to the life they’d previously known would affect how they felt about the Force and the Order itself. They were right, to an extent. Rael acted out and members of the Jedi Order granted him sympathetic leniency.
One could argue that Anakin’s fall to the dark side proved the Order was right to be cautious, but that’s not entirely true. Rael remembered his old home and endured an extremely traumatic and emotional incident – he was forced to kill his own Padawan to save the lives of hundreds of innocents. That could have been enough to turn anyone to the dark side, but when his former Master Dooku offered Rael the chance to join him in a quest for power, he declined.
