The Star Wars sequels would look drastically different if Luke Skywalker had managed to save Darth Vader from dying at the end of Return of the Jedi.
In light of the Star Wars prequels, Darth Vader’s death at the end of Return of the Jedi seems far more tragic. Luke Skywalker is finally able to break through and help his father turn from the dark side of the Force, only for him to sacrifice himself and die moments later. Yet if Luke had somehow managed to keep Vader alive as the Death Star II collapsed around them, the future of Star Wars would change drastically.
Assuming Luke were able to get the New Republic to help get Anakin to a stable condition, it will take both he and Leia to convince them not to put Anakin to death immediately. Leia—who had only recently learned the truth about her real father—would struggle to come to terms with the fact that Anakin is no longer a monster. Not only would Luke have to convince the New Republic not to put Anakin to death, but he’d have to implore his sister to accept their father’s redemption as well.
To make matters even more tragic for Leia, she would likely be put on the spot by Luke to help save Anakin from a death sentence. Unlike Luke, Leia’s diplomatic background allows her to make an argument in the New Republic Senate for why Vader has become Anakin again. But whether she would even want to defend her father is the question. Leia suffered terribly under Vader’s torture, which is why she may be reluctant to stake her career on saving his life.
In canon, Ben Solo idolized his grandfather for being Darth Vader. But if Ben is able to see Anakin’s redeemed side, he likely would never have become Kylo Ren in the first place. Hearing Anakin’s regrets and sorrow for how much pain he caused the galaxy would open Ben’s eyes to how dangerous that path is to walk. Instead, Ben would likely remain at Luke’s academy and complete his training as a Jedi Knight.
