Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz faced tough questions from Bernie Sanders and other lawmakers over the coffee giant’s stance on unions WSJWhatsNow

Mr. Schultz, testifying before a Senate committee, said the company has attemptedof the Starbucks Workers United union in good faith. Any unionized employee disciplined by Starbucks was a result of violating company policies, not advocating for a union, he said.

Sen. Bernie Sanders , who chairs the Senate committee, questioned Mr. Schultz Wednesday if he was personally involved in firing or retaliating against any pro-union chain worker, which the ex-CEO denied. Mr. Sanders pressed Mr. Schultz to promise to exchange bargaining proposals with Starbucks Workers United 14 days after the hearing.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Democratic senators pressed Mr. Schultz on the hundreds of unfair labor practice complaints filed by the union with the NLRB against Starbucks over allegations that it harassed and fired pro-union workers. Asked about allegations that Starbucks closed stores with union activity, Mr. Schultz said that the company closed many profitable locations because of crime, drug use and homeless individuals that had made its workers feel unsafe., also testified before the Senate committee. The NLRB staffer has alleged that at least one cafe election last year was mishandled in a way that favored Starbucks Workers United.
