the show is a throwback that hearkens to what the city has been—and what it will become again in these post-pandemic years.
“Every night it’s electric in there, and I think it just proves yet again that timeless means timely,” he says of the show’s preview performances. “I think this return to form is not just operating in the writing, but in a meta way it’s commenting on the fact that this city is returning to its form again, it’s resurrecting again. It’s never been down and out for too long.
“When we rehearsed the number—I’ll never forget this day—they were going over their harmonies together in the rehearsal studio,” Uzele says, “and John Kander stood up and he spoke. He addressed the group and said, ‘You guys, you’re singing the song to Francine. Every single word you’re saying is entreating her to stay in the city and telling her why she’s meant to be here.
