At a May meeting to honor Arab American Heritage Month, Commissioner George Khoury called Israel a 'racist, fascist state.' A fellow commissioner has asked for an apology.
“I am the proof to you that I am a Palestinian of heritage,” Khoury added. “I can list my family for 600 years in Jerusalem. And I dare, I dare, any of the politicians present that can list their family for more than maybe 50 to 100 years in Jerusalem.”to his fellow commissioners, Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez said he couldn’t stand for Khoury’s “hate speech.
“It’s not even necessarily about an apology, it’s about an acknowledgment of the timing of those comments that were said at the meeting not necessarily being tied to the agenda item,” added Andrew Strong, director of the county’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice. “Anti-Zionism is not antisemitism,” San Diego resident Jeanine Erikat said, noting that Khoury stated salient facts about his own story. “It is this divisive language that continues to divide our county, our nation and the state.”
conducted by the Jewish Electorate Institute of 800 American Jewish voters. In response to the statement, “Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is similar to racism in the U.S.,” 34 percent of those surveyed agreed with the statement, and 30 percent disagreed but said the statement is not antisemitic. Twenty percent disagreed with the statement, but said it is antisemitic.
Fabienne Perlov, San Diego regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, also said Khoury’s remarks were not appropriate for the setting. “The purpose of this meeting is not to pit communities against one another, but to promote mutual respect and elevate the contributions of all,” she said.
