Breaking: Staten Island Ferry is running limited to no service for the morning commute due to a large number of sick calls, the DOT says. elijahwestbrook is live at St. George terminal with the latest on what you need to know.

In a statement, the DOT said in part,"We are doing whatever it takes to provide continuous ferry service and ensure New Yorkers can travel between Staten Island and Manhattan at no cost. We encourage everyone to avoid nonessential travel on the ferry and use alternate modes of transportation where possible."

We're told a full crew to operate a boat includes one captain, an assistant captain, three mates, one chief engineer, a marine engineer, two marine oilers and six deckhands. Due to the shortage of workers Tuesday and for the safety of passengers and crew members, the DOT legally cannot operate the number of vessels it typically runs throughout the day. Boats typically operate every 15-20 minutes during the morning rush.
