The neighborhood has some of the best-documented history of any in the city, maybe because the developers took a personal approach to planning and promoting it.
, southeast of downtown, was one of the first parts of San Antonio to be developed on formerly agricultural land.
From 1891 to 1895, it was owned by Alamo Heights developers H.B. Chamberlin and W.J.B. Patterson, known as the Park Terrace Co. But the land didn’t sell and went back to the Steves family at a sheriff’s auction. The Highland Park partners put their names on the streets of their development — Avant, Hammond, Kayton, Matlock, Peck, Rigsby — except for Peterson, who opted out in favor of Highland Boulevard. Some, including Hammond, Matlock and Hyman, even built houses of their own on those streets.
