“I like the hands-on stuff,’’ said Aislinn Murray, a 16-year-old junior, while she cracked stubborn flakes of hardened plastic foam off the back of a piece of fiberglass sculpture with her putty knife. “I think it’s a really cool experience.’’
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Armed with putty knives, box-cutters, and a cake frosting spreader, students on a field trip from Berea Midpark High School filled a shop area at Austin Finishing Co. in Cleveland on Tuesday with the rasping, crunching, squeaking sound of art conservation in action.
Images of the 1967 cast aluminum relief sculpture "Tree of Knowledge,'' by 1935 Cleveland Institute of Art graduate Robert Fillous.Parts of the sculpture resemble seven large eyes filled with symbols representing fields of knowledge that include the sciences, history, geography, economics, art, physical education, and literature and the humanities. Those were the pieces on which the students worked Tuesday.
While the money is raised, the Austin company will continue to store the pieces of the sculpture for safekeeping, said owner David Smith. Berea Midpark High School Manveer Singh peers into a microscope at Austin Finishing Co. in Cleveland, where he and classmate Aislinn Murray are participating in a project to restore their alma mater's "Tree of Knowledge" sculpture.They said it was meaningful to them to help save an artwork destined once again to adorn their alma mater.
