Sudan's defence minister says military has overthrown and arrested Omar al Bashir and taken charge of the country for the next two years following nearly four months of popular protests

Ibn Ouf appeared on state TV, in military fatigues, following an earlier announcement of an "important statement" coming from the army on Thursday. Clashes erupted on Tuesday between soldiers trying to protect the protesters and intelligence and security personnel trying to disperse them. Opposition figures have called for the military to help negotiate an end to Bashir's nearly three decades in power and a transition to democracy.
