Someone may consider the Sugar Land Regional Airport “just an airport” but for nearly 320,000 bees, it is home.

The apiary was a way for the airport to kill two birds with one stone: keep bees out of the rest of the airport while also giving the vital pollinators a space to prosper. In recent years “bee encounters” had been increasingly common at the airport and airports are ideal bee habitats, the news release stated. In a 2022 bee coup d'état, a queen was separated from her workers when a hive on a jet wing was removed by a bee wrangler. Maintenance technicians and the wrangler had to work together to re-hive the bees.Staff from the Sugar Land Regional Airport sought help from the Fort Bend Beekeepers Association to set up the apiaries.
