SMB Wonder appears set to bring new boss fights.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to be something of a triumphant return for the iconic platforming series, and it's poised to resolve an unfortunate trend regarding boss battles from the most recent games. The Super Mario Bros. games specifically – those that follow the classic 2D, side-scrolling formula – have been out of the limelight for over a decade, with New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. is no stranger to re-emergence. 1995's Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was the last 2D side-scroller before the massively influential, must-play classic game Super Mario 64 waylaid the series with 3D entries until New Super Mario Bros. landed on the Nintendo DS in 2006. The New SMB run lasted through four entries, and while they all have the engaging gameplay expected of the series, many features – their art style especially – grew tiresome with stagnation.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Might Be Replacing The Koopalings Even though the Koopalings debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, the best 2D Super Mario Bros. game, they overstayed their welcome in the New SMB era. Iggy, Larry, Lemmy, Ludwig, Morton Jr., Roy, and Wendy O. appeared as bosses in three consecutive games – New SMB Wii, New SMB 2, and New SMB U.
The Koopaling boss battles have always fell within the realm of "more involved combat" compared to the rest of the games' enemies, but Super Mario Bros. Wonder's apparent emphasis on "giant enemies" for its boss battles sounds like a new direction. The SMB Wonder trailer hints at just a single boss battle, which has shades of Koopaling, but is noticeably different.
As Super Mario Bros. Wonder's announcement trailer, it's likely this footage is of an early-game boss. This one doesn't necessarily qualify as a giant enemy, but that descriptor is unfortunately vague. It's entirely possible this is just some new form of Koopaling, which would be disappointing, but this short clip shows no signs of the boss "[smashing] parts of the scenery." Wonder's entire trailer oozes creativity – much more than the New Super Mario Bros.
