More than 60% of surveyed faculty members said they would not recommend a job in Texas to their out-of-state colleagues.

The fight over tenure was, in itself, enough to strike fear into professors across the state. Tenure is awarded based on merit, and it generally means a professor’s contract can only be terminated under extreme circumstances, such as financial struggles or program discontinuation.Roughly three in 10 survey respondents said they don’t plan to remain in academia long-term.The Texas Faculty Association works to protect the rights of higher education faculty and staff.

The American Association of University Professors has 45,000 members nationwide. It conducted the survey – distributed by social media and email – as part of a larger effort that also involved polls in Georgia, North Carolina and Florida.
