The suspect who reportedly attacked and killed a Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy in October 2021 may face the death penalty, the county attorney's office said months later.

"On Oct. 9, 2021, Deputy Juan Ruiz was simply doing his job and he paid the ultimate price trying to keep our community safe. This office will seek justice for Deputy Ruiz and his family.
Deputy Ruiz's impact is felt in so many ways, including those who continue to wait for a life-saving organ. "During a time when men and women in law enforcement face scrutiny, sometimes demonization, or expected to be perfect and underappreciated – but a scumbag piece of out of the Department of Corrections can put him on life support when he comes to work every day in uniform to keep this community safe," Penzone said on a news conference on Oct. 9.
