Democratic presidential hopeful Eric Swalwell wants to maintain private insurance while adding a public option, a position consistent with his past support of privatized Medicare Advantage

Swalwell is considering a run for the Democratic presidential nomination. , preparing to find a lane in a crowded field of 2020 Democratic Presidential candidates, is moving to the right of rivals pushing a single-payer version of Medicare for All.

“I support coverage for all, which would be a public option that would drive down the pressure on the private insurers,” Swalwell said during his MSNBC appearance. Swalwell’s expected to announce his candidacy for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination soon. The health insurance industry doesn’t support a public option, but health insurers are seeing record growth in Medicare Advantage, private coverage administered by insurers via contracts with the federal government.
