The Taliban launch a new assault on Afghanistan's northern city of Kunduz, which briefly fell to the militants in 2015 and has come under attack several times since then

File photo shows members of the Taliban standing at the site of the execution of three men in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, April 18, 2015.

He said hundreds of people fled their homes as the sound of gunfire and explosions echoed from the city's outskirts. The militants effectively control nearly half of Afghanistan and have continued to launch daily attacks on security forces despite holding several rounds of peace talks with the United States in recent months.

Among those killed was Faqir Ahmad Noori, the head of operations for the provincial police. Another two police and a civilian were wounded, Khateby said.
