Padres pitcher Nick Martinez on his unique role, what the Olympics means to him and the player option on his contract after the season
this past offseason. He made his major league debut in 2014 with the Texas Rangers, where he worked as a starter and then a reliever before ultimately being labeled as a “depth guy” by interested teams. Concerned he wouldn’t get the opportunity to permanently start again, Martinez opted to take a chance on himself in Japan, where he played four seasons and worked to improve his mechanics and repertoire.
Maybe like the last two or so years, I’ve started to play with more passion; kind of just being my true self. Before, I’ve always thought that you wanted to show that you’re even-keeled. And guys are really good at that, like Kyle Hendricks is really even-keel. Drew Smyly is the same way, very even-keel. I know both those guys and it didn’t matter if it was good or bad, same outcome. And that’s good and all but I like to show emotion. I like to play with passion.
