Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam pulled out of the meeting when she discovered that Ted Cruz had told reporters about the plans.

GOP Sen. Ted Cruz has hit out at Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam after she scrapped a meeting between the two scheduled for Saturday.

The Texas senator, who was wearing black in solidarity with the protesters, was supposedly requested to keep his meeting with Lam confidential, but the plans were scrapped when Cruz told reporters in Hong Kong. Lam argued the law would only target those who hide their identities while acting violently as"an effective deterrent to radical behavior," however the move only seemed to galvanize protesters further.

Thousands took to the streets in face masks directly after the announcement to enact the law and thousands more turned out on Saturday.
