hit is so packed with puns and pop culture quips that it’s hard to catch them all, but during this week’s episode, viewers with an interest in San Francisco counterculture might have noticed an offhand reference to one of the most influential psychedelic groups in the city’s history: the Merry Pranksters.
During “The Strings That Bind Us” , coach Ted Lasso introduces his team to a new set of tactics called “total football.” The strategy was popularized by the Dutch in the ’60s and ’70s, and it involves a team abandoning traditional formations in favor of a freestyle philosophy in which players float around the field instead of playing strict positions.
