Teen Wolf star Colton Haynes almost lost his role because of a gay men's magazine photoshoot he did.
Teen Wolf star Colton Haynes almost wasn't cast in the show over a photoshoot for a gay men's magazine. Based on the 1985 film of the same name, the MTV television series Teen Wolf began in 2011 and ran for six seasons. Haynes played the role of Jackson Whittemore, a main character in Teen Wolf season 1 and 2, before departing the show. However, the actor would later reprise this role in several guest appearances during Teen Wolf's final season 6.
In May of 2016, Haynes publicly came out as gay. By that time, the actor had already left Teen Wolf — the role which launched him into stardom — and had been starring as Roy Harper, a.k.a. Arsenal, in the CW series Arrow. Since coming out, Haynes has been vocal about the struggles of being an openly gay actor in the entertainment industry.
"Look what almost happened, Colton. The head of MTV almost didn't hire you because of that XY photo shoot we've been working our asses off to extinguish. Thank God Jeff fought for you to get that role." While there are now more openly queer actors than ever, homophobia is still a real and serious concern within the entertainment industry. In his memoir, Haynes writes about how he actively changed the way he spoke and dressed in auditions to give the impression of"butch" masculinity and heterosexuality.
