JERUSALÉN (AP) — Mientras se avecina una ofensiva terrestre israelí en la Franja de Gaza en su guerra más devastadora hasta el momento con Hamas, una de las mayores amenazas tanto para sus tropas como para los 2,3 millones de palestinos atrapados dentro del enclave costero se encuentra enterrada en las profundidades del subsuelo.
Un extenso laberinto de túneles construidos por el grupo extremista Hamas se extiende a lo largo de la franja densamente poblada y oculta a los combatientes, su arsenal de cohetes y a más de 200 rehenes que ahora retiene tras el ataque sin precedentes del 7 de octubre contra Israel. Desalojar y derrumbar esos túneles será crucial si Israel quiere desmantelar a Hamas.
La guerra en túneles ha sido una característica de la historia, desde el asedio romano de la antigua ciudad griega de Ambracia hasta los combatientes ucranianos que resistieron a las fuerzas rusas en 24 kilómetros de túneles de la era soviética debajo de la planta siderúrgica Azovstal, en Mariúpol, durante unos 80 días en 2022.
