The workers include teaching assistants, graduate students, researchers and other employees.
Negotiations for a new contract have been ongoing for more than a year, according to the Washington Post. The University of California system says it's reached an agreement with the UAW on how to better enforce a"respectful work environment," but larger bargaining positions remain unresolved. Most notably, the two sides are far apart on wages. Workers are asking for a $54,000 minimum salary for graduate student workers, a $70,000 minimum salary for postdoctoral scholars and a 14% salary increase for researchers, as well as annual cost-of-living adjustments.
