Test strips for fentanyl, supervised injection sites, might come to California
kits that test drugs for the presence of deadly fentanyl, as well as equipment that tests for “date rape” like drugs ketamine and gamma hydroxybutyric acid in drinks. Such testing kits currently fall under the definition of illegal “drug paraphernalia.”
Controversy over what used to be called “safe injection sites” is blistering, and that’s a bridge the three Southern California counties are apparently not yet ready to cross. Orange County has also long resisted clean needle exchange programs. The Orange County Board of Supervisors endorsed Davies’ bill after holding its own hearing on the fentanyl crisis.
“Most of the drugs in the street are adulterated. If people had a way to test, they might use less, and they might choose not to use,” said Dr. Randolph P. Holmes, public policy committee chair for the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the California Society of Addiction Medicine. “We think this is a good idea.”
Holmes, who practices in Whittier and is medical director for the Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, begs to differ.
