Many parts of the country are dealing with shortages of coronavirus testing supplies. But rural areas face distinct challenges, such as few potential replacements when health-care workers get sick.
Two hours from the nearest interstate, Irene Bell showed up at the only hospital in Lander, Wyo., complaining of a cough.
The 63-year-old uses oxygen tanks full time for her chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, making her particularly vulnerable to complications from Covid-19. But the hospital didn’t test Ms. Bell for the new coronavirus earlier this month, and instead sent her back to her retirement home with antibiotics, according to her daughter.
