“That was a threat, and it was not received well by a lot of people in the room,” Roy said, suggesting the hardball tactics from the McCarthy camp stiffened the rebels’ resolve. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., an outspoken and provocative conservative member, called out Roy and other insurgents.The other 22 Texas Republicans elected to the House in November backed McCarthy. The state’s Democrats all lined up behind Jeffries, the first Black person to lead a major American political party.
With a hint of schadenfreude, Democrats warned Tuesday’s chaos could be a sign of things to come this session. McCarthy has worked in vain for weeks to secure support from some of his most conservative members, including those from the House Freedom Caucus. They have focused on changes to the rules that would empower individual members to push out the speaker.
“I love the new rules. I’m looking for somebody that will enforce them,” Self said after the House adjourned. “That’s what I’m working on.”
