The proposal potentially pits Dallas, with its existing nonstop access to Reagan, against other Texas cities clamoring for their own direct flights.

The country’s major airlines have been battling over whether to expand the number of flights at Reagan. Each airline has its own vested financial interests as they make arguments about the best policy approach for travelers.

At issue are limits on the overall number of flights at Reagan and how far those flights can travel - the perimeter is now set at 1,250 miles. The perimeter rule was established decades ago as a way of keeping Reagan traffic manageable and pushing travelers to use the larger Dulles in spite of its less convenient location.

Various business interests in those cities have backed the effort to expand flights at Reagan and a bipartisan group of eight Texas House members spanning the ideological spectrum wrote aConservative Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Austin led the group that also included freshman Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin, who is among the most progressive members of the House.

Allred sits on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee that already advanced its version of the FAA bill. The panel opted to punt on the Reagan flights issue during committee debate. That means Allred hasn’t cast a vote on it but it’s likely to come up again during full House consideration. He said Reagan’s capacity is already stretched and that he wants to hear more from American, which is a major presence in Dallas, about its concerns.
