There were similar surprising and era-ending cuts in Caserio’s second initial 53-man roster, a 2022 Texans team that was officially finalized Tuesday. But the financial ramifications were nominal, and the franchise is still poised for an eventual spending spree next offseason. And while some of the player departures were unexpected, they mostly underlined the team’s shift toward pursuing more productive players.
Houston’s most confounding move was releasing running back Marlon Mack. All nine of Houston’s 2022 draft picks made the 53-man roster, including first-round selectee Kenyon Green, who is expected to start at left guard in place of Scharping. Three undrafted free agents also made the team. Kurt Hinish, a defensive tackle from Notre Dame, edged out Blacklock with an impressive preseason.
The Texans are third on the NFL’s waiver wire list, which gives them prime positioning to make a claim on players released by other teams.
