Texas A&M football position analysis: Defensive line
Sixth in a position-by-position series looking at the 2023 Texas A&M Aggies after spring football workouts.: McKinnley Jackson, senior; Isaiah Raikes, junior; Shemar Turner, junior; Fadil Diggs, junior; Albert Regis, sophomore; Walter Nolen, sophomore; Shemar Stewart, sophomore; Malick Sylla, sophomore; Enai White, sophomore; LT Overton, sophomore; Micaiah Overton, junior; Drew Beltran, junior; Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, freshman; Jadon Scarlett, freshman.
The Aggies were 123rd out of 131 FBS teams last year against the run, which doesn’t add up considering they have five five-star signees on the line, although all were underclassmen last year. One of those five-star prospects, Shemar Turner, was named the spring drills defensive most valuable player , so things do appear to be looking up for a talented lineup along the line, starting with Turner.
A&M allowed a combined 951 rushing yards in three consecutive losses late in the season to Mississippi , Florida and Auburn , a lopsided total that left old school members of A&M’s once-feared “Wrecking Crew” defense wincing. Certainly an overall lean linebacking corps played a role in the Aggies’ problems against the run, but as coaches across the land claim, it all starts up front, for better or worse. With Turner now a junior and highly rated prospects like Walter Nolen and LT Overton with SEC experience under their belts, the Aggies likely will be improved – and perhaps even much improved – along the defensive line this season.
