Former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum has a simple message after beating cancer: ‘Life is good - give it your best shot’COLLEGE STATION — R.C. Slocum knew precious little about Poteet, other than he’d drive through the small town on hunting trips to South Texas, and country music star George Strait was born in that sliver of Atascosa County.A precious package arrived in the mail last year, however, and Slocum will be forever fond of the people of Poteet.
“Everyone , you just don’t know when,” said a pragmatic Slocum, who has won more games than any A&M football coach. “Fortunately, I was at a point in my life where I had lived a wonderful, blessed life. And if the plan was for me to not be here any longer, I was OK with it. “Right at the top of the list was try to help other people,” he said. “To share my faith and share a positive attitude about approaching illness.”
