University of Texas basketball coach Chris Beard was arrested and charged with assault on a family or household member Monday morning. According to jail records with the Travis County sheriff's office, the 49-year-old Beard was booked into jail at 4:18 a.m.
The assault charge, which includes impeding"breath circulation" according to the police report, is a third-degree felony.that officers responded to a 911 call 2:07 a.m. and Beard is accused of choking someone. Texas released a statement saying,"The University is aware of the situation regarding Chris Beard. We are continuing to gather information and monitoring the legal process."
Beard, who graduated from Texas, coached five seasons at Texas Tech, leading the Red Raiders to the 2019 national championship game before accepting the Longhorns job after the 2021 season. He took Texas to the NCAA Tournament in his first year as head coach, guiding them into the round of 32. Texas is currently ranked No. 2 in the country and
