Democrats and other critics raised concerns that the bill’s language is so broad that it could impact a host of other activities, from banning gay-straight alliance clubs to prohibiting teachers from celebrating their marriages or pregnancies at school. The legislation could block school dances or Valentine’s Day activities, they said.

“If a teacher had an activity themselves, and it was a small group of kids that want to participate in it and their parents are OK with it, my bill is not trying to stop that,” King said. “My bill is trying to stop an entire district forcing the entire student population to participate in something whether they want to or not.”State Rep. James Talarico, D-Round Rock, asked the bill author whether he believes being gay is a choice, and King said he “can’t answer that.

Almost half of all LGBTQ youth have seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, according to the survey. But LGBTQ youth who live in supportive communities — at home, school or both — have reported significantly lower rates of suicide attempts than those who do not. Ryan Davenport, an assistant principal at Dallas ISD, said HB 1507 threatens public schools and their educators — some of the state’s most important employees who are already grappling with a growing teacher shortage. Schools should be a place to “celebrate who kids are and teach them how to appreciate differences,” he said.
