The Republicans who control the Texas House propose $5 billion in extra education spending. Critics say it's still less than 2019 funding.

, Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, propose diverting funds from property tax relief to instead fund schools. Others increase special education funding, provide money for specific projects, promote scholarships and so on. Any proposals to take away funds earmarked for property tax relief are almost certainly doomed to fail, given that it's a major priority of the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the House.

Yeager and other public education advocates spoke at a Tuesday morning press conference, calling for a $1,000 increase to the basic allotment instead of the planned $50 raise. If the basic allotment had kept up with inflation since it was raised to $6,160 in 2019, it would now be $7,325, the Texas American Federation of Teachers wrote in an emailed news release.

“If this is what ends up passing the Texas House, every legislator who votes for it is telling our kids and the people who take care of them exactly what they’re worth: nothing,” said Zeph Capo, president of Texas AFT.Greg Abbott has claimed in speeches around the state
